I received a grant from the Oakland Unified School District to take some classes at the Athletic Playground as professional development. During the weeknights, I would head over to the playground around 5:30 PM, and I would spend the next 2-3 hours taking classes like: monkey conditioning, acroyoga, handstand class, and aerial conditioning. The weekends were a similar routine but I started around 9:30 AM, and I added parkour to the list of activities. After one month, I can’t say that I’m an expert at any one of these activities, but I can say that I acquired enough skills and knowledge to teach a handstand class and monkey conditioning. I plan to continue to take lessons in acroyoga, aerial conditioning, and parkour in hopes of gaining enough proficiency to teach said classes.
My original intent was to acquire some new skills that I could in turn, offer as classes in the Health, Fitness & Recreation Program. Not only did I acquire new skills to teach, but my time spent at the Athletic Playground inspired me with a vision. I want to share with you my vision for the Health, Fitness & Recreation program.
